Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What files does Luma edit?
Luma edits .md and .markdown files. Your files remain plain text on your disk. Luma does not move them, upload them, or convert them into a private format.
Q2. Can I use Luma without the internet?
Yes. Luma is an offline-first app. It does not communicate with external servers, so it works in environments where network access is limited or unavailable.
Q3. Can I open files made in other Markdown tools?
Yes. Luma works with plain Markdown files, so you can open .md files created in other tools. Files saved by Luma can also be opened elsewhere.
Q4. How do I paste a table from Excel, Numbers, or Google Sheets?
Select a cell range in your spreadsheet app, copy it with Command-C, then paste it into Luma with Command-V. If the paste is recognized as table data, Luma converts it into a Markdown table and shows a status message.
Q5. Mermaid diagrams only appear gray. What should I do?
This happened in very early builds. The current version applies Luma's color palette automatically. Please update to the latest Mac App Store version.
Q6. My font settings disappear after restarting. What should I check?
After changing the font in the settings panel, click outside the panel once to confirm the change. If the setting still resets, quit Luma completely with Command-Q and reopen it.
Q7. How do I make .md files open with Luma by default?
In Finder, right-click a .md file and choose Open With - Luma. To make this permanent, choose Get Info - Open with - Luma - Change All.
Q8. What happens if a file changes outside Luma?
Luma watches for external changes. If there are no unsaved edits, it reloads the new content. If you have unsaved edits, Luma shows a conflict banner so you can keep your changes or reload from disk.
Q9. Is Luma available on Windows?
Not yet. Luma currently supports macOS. A Windows build is planned for a future 1.x release, depending on user feedback.
Q10. Where does my data go?
Nowhere. Luma does not collect, transmit, or store user data. See the Privacy Policy for details.
